Electric motor or combustion engine?

Two different types of RC motors are available. Electric motors and combustion engines. Electric motors are relatively cheap and clean to drive. They require less maintenance, the acceleration is high and usually faster than with combustion engines. As the power is drawn from batteries, the driving time is often short. Batteries can be quickly replaced and recharged. Combustion engines take longer and require more expensive fuel. The sound is of course inimitable. Beginners should avoid combustion engines.

Brush or brushless?

Electric motors are divided into brushless (brushless) and brushed (with carbon brush). Both types work with direct current. Brushless electric motors do not have slip rings or commutators and brushes; such a motor has a longer service life and generally also more speed or power than a similarly sized brushed motor. There is a separate speed controller for each of the two motor types.

Brushless motors (brushless motors) are very powerful, efficient, fast and have a long service life. The best choice for an RC car model. With a small budget, however, a fast and powerful drive can also be realized with brushed motors.

If you want to buy a brushless motor, you should buy a brushless motor combo pack with a matching brushless controller and a programming card. The programming card makes it easy to make settings and adapt the driving characteristics to the model.

Motor power

The power of brushless motors is indicated by the abbreviation "kV". KV stands for the number of revolutions per minute per volt. The higher this number, the higher the speed. If the model car is to be used off-road, a lower KV value is advisable.

All motors differ in the number of windings. These range from 3.5 to 35 windings (turns). A lower number of windings results in higher motor speeds with a very sharp increase in current consumption and decreasing torque; a higher number of windings increases the torque, decreases the speed, the current consumption and thus also the achievable speed.
