Battery Technology in Model Building: The Right Power for Your RC Hobby
Without the right power source, your RC model stays still. Battery technology in model building is the heart of every remote-controlled car, plane, or boat. If you want maximum performance, long run times, and above all, safety, you need to delve into the topic of model building batteries. We show you which battery types dominate and how to maximize the lifespan of your energy storage devices.
LiPo, NiMH & More: The Big Battery Type Comparison
Choosing the right battery is crucial for your model's performance. The model building scene is mainly dominated by two battery types:
1. Lithium Polymer (LiPo) Batteries
The LiPo battery is the gold standard in modern RC model building. It offers the highest energy density and the lowest self-discharge rate.
- Advantages: Very lightweight, extremely high performance (C-Rate), low self-discharge.
- Important: LiPo batteries absolutely require a special charger with balancer function to charge each cell evenly and ensure maximum safety. Pay attention to correct storage and protection against deep discharge.
2. Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Batteries
The NiMH battery is ideal for beginners and anyone looking for a robust and uncomplicated solution.
- Advantages: Easy handling, high safety, very resistant to mechanical stress.
- Important: NiMH batteries are heavier and offer less peak power than LiPo batteries. They require special NiMH chargers.
More Than Just Voltage: Capacity (mAh) and Discharge Rate (C)
When buying model building batteries, you should know two central metrics to get the most out of your model:
- Capacity (mAh): The capacity in milliampere-hours (mAh) determines how long your model can drive or fly. Generally: The higher the mAh value, the longer the run time. Always measure your model's battery compartment!
- Discharge Rate (C-Rate): This value indicates how much current the battery can maximally deliver. A higher C-value is important for models with high power consumption, such as high-performance RC cars or speedboats.
Charging Technology and Battery Care: The Key to Longevity
The correct charging technology is essential for the safety and lifespan of your model building batteries.
- Multifunction Chargers: A modern RC charger charges all common battery types (LiPo, NiMH, LiFe, NiCd) and features important functions like balancing, discharging, and storage mode (Storage charge).
- Safety Accessories: Always use a LiPo Bag or a fireproof box to safely store LiPo batteries during charging and storage.
- Storage Charge: When not in use for an extended period, always store LiPo batteries with the correct Storage voltage (approx. 3.8 V per cell). This prevents deep discharge and protects the cells.
