aero-naut Möwe 2 fishing boat – RC wooden kit for beginners
The Möwe 2 from aero-naut is a characterful little North Sea fishing boat on a scale of 1:15. Measuring approximately 49.5 cm in length, the model combines classic wooden construction with precision-cut components and is particularly suitable for ambitious beginners, young people under expert supervision, and youth development programmes in model-making clubs.
Classic wooden construction with modern A-TEX material
The Möwe 2 is constructed entirely using traditional timber-framed methods. The precisely laser-cut components fit together cleanly, minimising the need for reworking. The hull is built on a sturdy framework consisting of the keel and frames, and is then planked with A-TEX.
A-TEX is a composite material developed by aero-naut, consisting of thin maple veneer and a stabilising textile backing. The textile backing makes the veneer more flexible and reduces the risk of it tearing or breaking when being fitted to the curves of the hull. As a result, A-TEX combines the low weight and natural workability of wood with increased flexural strength and fracture resistance. The material can be cut, sanded and glued using suitable wood glue. The textile side remains on the material during assembly and faces the inside of the hull.
As A-TEX contains real wood veneer, it is not inherently waterproof. The finished hull must therefore be carefully sealed inside and out with pore filler, primer and a suitable varnish. A watertightness test should also be carried out before the maiden voyage.
True-to-scale fittings
The aluminium mast, loading booms and exhaust pipe complement the wooden superstructure and give the finished fishing cutter a varied, maritime appearance. Numerous details ensure that the Möwe 2 is also an attractive display model when on land.
The fittings include, amongst other things, the wheelhouse with dashboard and steering wheel, cargo hatches, navigation lights, a net winch constructed from precisely cut plywood parts, and three wooden crates for the catch. The colour scheme can be customised – from a well-maintained museum cutter to a working vessel that has clearly been in service, complete with realistic signs of ageing and wear.
A manageable model-building project
The Möwe 2 offers an accessible introduction to classic ship model-building. The extensively illustrated assembly instructions guide you step by step through the construction of the keel, frames, planking, deck and wheelhouse.
Plenty of scope for personalised refinements
The Möwe 2 is ideal as a basis for your own ideas. Possible additions include, for example, working lights, additional fishing equipment, figures, fishing nets, extra transport crates or realistic weathering of the hull and superstructure.
Experienced model-makers can also fit the cutter with a movable net winch, a detailed wheelhouse or authentic nautical lighting. As the total weight when ready to sail is approximately 750 g and space within the hull is limited, any additional functions and electronic components should be planned as early as possible and kept as light as possible.
Prepared for RC operation
The electric motor, the propeller shaft with a suitable propeller, and the steering system are already included in the kit. For ready-to-run RC operation, you will also need a remote control with a receiver, a suitable speed controller, a rudder servo, a driving battery and a matching charger.
The kit is not ready to sail and must be fully assembled, glued, sealed and painted. The Möwe 2 is therefore aimed at model-makers who not only want to sail their boat but also wish to build it themselves, step by step.
